Active loudspeakers

The attraction of removing the unsightly morass of speaker cables in multi-channel systems is clear. Placing the amplifier in the speaker can accomplish this. Appropriate applications range from single powered speakers through to multi-channel sound bars.

Using Class D amplifiers in an active speaker brings even more benefit to the speaker manufacturer and the consumer in terms of quality and economy. Benefits are equally well realised in full band enclosures utilising DDFA technology or in subwoofer applications whereby the ZXCD based designs can be used.

DDFA fits particularly well in conventional full band loudspeakers. As passive units these use cross-over networks, made with large and expensive components to split the audio signal between drivers. This could be two way; with bass and tweeter or possibly three way; bass, mid, tweeter – or maybe more.

DDFAs amplifier designs feature dedicated DSP functions per channel. The all-digital active system accomplishes the same function as the passive crossovers using digital filters, prior to the amplification process. The filters are low cost, absolutely predictable and can be tuned to the speaker cabinet resonances.

A per driver amplifier channel enables a perfect power match with a choice in output stages. The DDFA digital input makes the process of receiving the audio signal from the central source very easy and reliable.
